When it became noised abroad in Avonlea that Anne Shirley had given up the idea of going to college and intended to stay home and teach there was a good deal of discussion over it. Most of the good folks, not knowing about Marilla's eyes, thought she was foolish.

noise abroad:言いふらす,広める
give up:断念する,あきらめる
foolish:思慮のない,愚かな

アン・シャーリーが大学へ行くことを止め、家の残って教師になるつもりだということがアヴォンリーに広まると、そのことについて色々な意見が交わされた。マリラの目のことを知らない善意の人々はたいていアンの決めたことは馬鹿げていると思った。
