Here there was nothing of this; Anne knew that outside of her window was a hard street, with a network of telephone wires shutting out the sky, the tramp of alien feet, and a thousand lights gleaming on stranger faces. She knew that she was going to cry, and fought against it.

ここには何もなかった；アンにはわかっている。窓の外には硬質の通りがあり、電話線網が空を遮る、知らない人の足音が聞こえ、見知らぬ人の顔の上でいくつもの光が輝いている。今にも泣きそうだとアンにはわかっていたので、必死にこらえていた。
