Anne had sat among the stumps and wept, not without an eye to the romance of it; but she was speedily consoled, for, after all, as she and Diana said, big girls of thirteen, going on fourteen, were too old for such childish amusements as playhouses, and there were more fascinating sports to be found about the pond. It was splendid to fish for trout over the bridge and the two girls learned to row themselves about in the little flat-bottomed dory Mr. Barry kept for duck shooting.

アンは切り株の間に座って涙を流したし、それにロマンチックさを感じないわけではなかったが、とにかくも即座に慰めとなったのは、アンもダイアナも二人が言うように、もうすぐ14歳にもなろうかという13歳の大きな女の子だし、おもちゃの家のような子どもっぽいものを楽しむには大きくなりすぎているから。おまけに、池の周囲にはもっと興味をそそる楽しいものが見つけられるからだ。橋の上からマスを釣るのはとても面白かったし、二人はカモ猟のためにバリーさんが置いてある小さな平底の船に乗って、自分たちで漕ぐこともできるようになった。
