There was a tang in the very air that inspired the hearts of small maidens tripping, unlike snails, swiftly and willingly to school; and it WAS jolly to be back again at the little brown desk beside Diana, with Ruby Gillis nodding across the aisle and Carrie Sloane sending up notes and Julia Bell passing a "chew" of gum down from the back seat. Anne drew a long breath of happiness as she sharpened her pencil and arranged her picture cards in her desk. Life was certainly very interesting.

10月の空気そのものに風味があった。のらりくらりと歩くのではなく、はずむように颯爽と喜び勇んで学校に赴く少女の心を刺激する。ダイアナの側の小さな茶色の机に戻ることは楽しかった。通路越しにルビー・ギリスが頷き、カリー・スローンがメモを寄こし、後ろの席からジュリア・ベルがガムを「一口」送ってくる。机に座って鉛筆を削り絵はがきを置くと、アンは幸せそうに大きくため息をついた。たしかに人生は面白い。
