"Did you ever go courting, Matthew?"

"Well now, no, I dunno's I ever did," said Matthew,
who had certainly never thought of such a thing in
his whole existence.

Anne reflected with her chin in her hands.

「そうさな、わしには分からんよ」マシューは答える。

「結婚を申し込んだことってある、マシュー？」

「う～ん、いや、そんなことしたことないよ」マシュー
は言う。生まれてこのかたそんなことを考えたことがな
かった。

あごを両手に乗せてアンは思案した。
