"Matthew, did you ever study geometry when you went
to school?"

"Well now, no, I didn't," said Matthew, coming out
of his doze with a start.

"I wish you had," sighed Anne, "because then you'd
be able to sympathize with me. You can't sympathize
properly if you've never studied it. It is casting
a cloud over my whole life. I'm such a dunce at it,
Matthew."

sigh:ため息をつく

「マシュー、学校に行ってるとき幾何の勉強したことある？」

「う～んと、いや、ないな」うたた寝からハッと目を覚まし
てマシューが返事をする。

「勉強したことがあればよかったのに」とアンはため息をつ
く。「それなら私に同情できるのにね。幾何を勉強したこと
がなければ、それがどういうものか同情しにくいわね。私の
将来に暗雲を投げかけているのが幾何。全然わからないのよ、
マシュー」
