THE next afternoon Anne, bending over her patchwork
at the kitchen window, happened to glance out and
beheld Diana down by the Dryad's Bubble beckoning
mysteriously. In a trice Anne was out of the house
and flying down to the hollow, astonishment and
hope struggling in her expressive eyes. But the
hope faded when she saw Diana's dejected countenance.
"Your mother hasn't relented?" she gasped.
Diana shook her head mournfully.

で意味ありげに手招きしているダイアナに気づいた。サッ
と家から出て窪地に駆け下りる。アンの目に様々な感情
を押しのけて驚きと同時に希望が現れるが、ダイアナの
しょげた顔つきを見るとその希望も消えてしまった。
「お母さんは許してくれないの？」息を切らしてアンが言う。
悲しげにダイアナは首を横に振った。
