For a moment Anne looked as if she meant to disobey.
Then, realizing that there was no help for it, she
rose haughtily, stepped across the aisle, sat down
beside Gilbert Blythe, and buried her face in her
arms on the desk. Ruby Gillis, who got a glimpse of
it as it went down, told the others going home from
school that she'd "acksually never seen anything like
it--it was so white, with awful little red spots in it."

ほんの一瞬だが、アンは先生の言うことを無視するように
見えた。が、どうしようもないと分かったのだろう、キッ
と顔を上げて立ち上がると通路を越えてギルバートの横に
座った。両手を机の上に出して顔を埋めている。アンが顔
を埋める時にチラっと垣間見たルビー・ギルスは、学校か
ら帰るとき他の子どもたちにこう話していた。「実際あん
なの見たことないわ－－もう真っ青、それに赤い点々が出
てるのよ」
