"You needn't plead, Anne. You are not going to the picnic
and that's final. No, not a word."

Anne realized that Marilla was not to be moved. She
clasped her hands together, gave a piercing shriek,
and then flung herself face downward on the bed, crying
and writhing in an utter abandonment of disappointment
and despair.

plead:嘆願する,訴える
clasp:握りしめる
piercing shriek:金切り声
fling oneself on:～に身体を投げ出す
writhe:身をよじる
utter:完全な,ひどい
abandonment:自暴自棄

despair:絶望

「お願いする必要はないよ、アン。あんたはピクニックに行
かない。それだけ。それ以上一言も言ってはいけません」

マリラの心が変わらないことがアンには分かった。両手を合
わせヒステリーじみた声をあげるとベッドに身を投げて、絶
望の淵に突き落とされたように身をよじりながら泣いた。
