in. And this is the little girl you have adopted,
I suppose?"
"Yes, this is Anne Shirley," said Marilla.
"Spelled with an E," gasped Anne, who, tremulous
and excited as she was, was determined there should
be no misunderstanding on that important point.
Mrs. Barry, not hearing or not comprehending, merely
shook hands and said kindly:
cordially:心から
adopt:養子として引き取る
gasp:あえぎながら言う
tremulous:震えた
comprehend:よく理解する
shake hands:握手する,手を握る
「ごきげんよう、マリラ」心のこもった声でバリー夫人は
尋ねた。「お入りなさい。この子が養女にしたという女の
子ね？」
「そうよ。アン・シャーリーというの」マリラは答える。
「最後にEが付きます」震えるほど興奮しているけれど、大
事なこの点だけは誤解されては困るからはっきりさせなくちゃ
と、アンは言葉を詰まらせながら言った。
バリー夫人は、それを聞き逃したのかそれとも何のことを
言っているのか分からなかったのか、ただ手を握って優し
く言った：
