Anne rose to her feet, with clasped hands, the tears
still glistening on her cheeks; the dish towel she had
been hemming slipped unheeded to the floor.

"Oh, Marilla, I'm frightened--now that it has come
I'm actually frightened. What if she shouldn't like
me! It would be the most tragical disappointment of
my life."

流した涙で頬を濡らしたままアン両手を握り締めて立ち上
がると、ヘリを縫っていたふきんが床に落ちたことにも気
がつかなかった。

「マリラ、怖いわ。とうとうその時が来たのね。本当に怖
い。ダイアナに嫌われたら、人生最大の悲劇だし、絶望だわ」
