Anne clasped her hands together, bowed her head, and waited for the word of judgment. There was no mistaking her sincerity--it breathed in every tone of her voice. Both Marilla and Mrs. Lynde recognized its unmistakable ring. But the former under-stood in dismay that Anne was actually enjoying her valley of humiliation--was reveling in the thoroughness of her abasement. Where was the wholesome punishment upon which she, Marilla, had plumed herself? Anne had turned it into a species of positive pleasure.

アンは両手を合わせ、頭をたれて、リンド夫人の言葉を待った。アンが真剣なのは間違いなかった。この子の言葉の節々にそれが見て取れる。マリラもリンド夫人も、その真剣な響きを間違いなく聞き取った。しかしマリラの思いは苦々しい。アンはどん底の屈辱を実は楽しんでいるのだ、屈辱を徹底することでかえって楽しんでいるのだと。うまくいったと密かに自慢していたのに、その罰の効果はどこにいったのか？　アンはそれをちょっとした楽しみに変えてしまった。
