Mrs. Spencer whisked away, after pulling up
the blinds. Anne sitting mutely on the ottoman,
with her hands clasped tightly in her lap,
stared at Mrs Blewett as one fascinated. Was
she to be given into the keeping of this
sharp-faced, sharp-eyed woman? She felt a lump
coming up in her throat and her eyes smarted
painfully.

行った。きつく握り締めた両手を膝に置き、黙って
足台に座っていたアンは、魅入られたようにブレウェッ
ト夫人を見つめている。目つきの鋭いきつい顔立ち
のこの人に、自分は預けられるのだろうか。アンは、
何か塊がのどまで上がってくるのを感じ、目はズキ
ズキと痛んだ。
