Down at the base of the cliffs were heaps of
surf-worn rocks or little sandy coves inlaid with
pebbles as with ocean jewels; beyond lay the sea,
shimmering and blue, and over it soared the
gulls, their pinions flashing silvery in the
sunlight.

崖の下は打ち寄せる波に削られた岩があちこちにあり、
砂でできた小さな入り江にはめ込まれた小石は海の宝
石のようだ。その向こうに、青く揺らめく海があり、
その上をカモメが高く舞っていた。太陽の光を受けて
その風切り羽が銀色に輝いている。
