The shore road was "woodsy and wild and lonesome."
On the right hand, scrub firs, their spirits quite
unbroken by long years of tussle with the gulf
winds, grew thickly.

woodsy:森林を思わせる
lonesome:孤立した,人里離れた
scrub:低木の茂み,低木
tussle:激しい取っ組み合い

湾岸道路は「木が多く、荒れた感じで人の気配もない」
道路の右手には、湾から吹いてくる風に長年さらされ耐
えてきた不屈の精神を感じさせるモミの低木が、体を寄
せ合うように茂っている。
