him to gobble them up at a mouthful if they ventured

sidewise: = sideways sideways glance:横目
gobble up:ぺろりと食べる
at a mouthful:一口で
venture:思い切って～する
well bred:育ちの良い

ちらちら横目で見ながらこわごわ横を通り過ぎるのが嫌
だった。一言でも声をかけたらひと口で女の子たちを飲
み込んでしまうとでも思っているようだ。アヴォンリー
に住む躾けの良い女の子というのはそんなものだ。
