Why, it was only last week I read in the paper
how a man and his wife up west of the Island
took a boy out of an orphan asylum and he set
fire to the house at night--set it ON PURPOSE,
Marilla--and nearly burnt them to a crisp in
their beds.

crisp:カリカリしたもの(burn A to a crispで「カリカリに焼く」）
adopt:～を養子にする

そうだ、ほんの一週間前のことよ。新聞で読んだのだ
けどね。島の西の丘に住んでいる夫婦が孤児院から男
の子を引き取ったのだけど、夜中に家に火をつけてね。
わざとなのよ、マリラ。その人たちはベッドで焼け死
にそうになったっていうじゃない。
