There were three plates laid, so that Marilla must be
expecting some one home with Matthew to tea; but the
dishes were everyday dishes and there was only
crab-apple preserves and one kind of cake, so that
the expected company could not be any particular
company.

crab apple:野生リンゴ
preserve:果物の砂糖煮

お皿は三つ置かれている。ということは、誰かマシューと
一緒に帰ってきてお茶を一緒に飲むつもりに違いない。だ
けど、お皿は日ごろ使うお皿だし、野生のリンゴの砂糖煮
とケーキが一種類というところをみると、やって来るお客
は特別なお客というわけではなさそう。
