The follow-up to Terrapath, the band's debut album, Flare finds prog-, math, and jazz-rock-injected indie rockers Plantoid pushing their shape-shifting sound in even more directions. It was again produced by sometimes live member Nathan Ridley, who helped them both stretch their stylistic palette and settle down their tendency toward abrupt changes, instead staying with moods for a little while longer. This has resulted in some lengthier track times, with four of the nine songs here passing the six-minute mark. It has also contributed to spacey, atmospheric entries like the daydreamy "Slow Moving," whose elongated, sustain-suffused design doesn't feel the need to burst into a more uptempo jam.

She last released a full-length album, Mood Cosmic, in 2022. Since then, Sandtorv has battled health issues which led to her almost qutting music. But in 2024 she returned with a new trio called Orbits (with Jaga Jazzist’s Lars Horntveth and producer Erlend Mokkelbost) and earlier this year released the single “Softer”. This was followed in September by ‘Laugh Now, Cry Later.’

Neon Ion is the solo project of award-winning songwriter Natalie Sandtorv. Having made her name with debut record Freedom Nation in 2017, Sandtorv launched the Neon Ion project in 2020 with the Heart Echoes album, following it up in 2022 with second release Mood Cosmic.

Inspired by R&B, jazz, psych and rock, Sandtorv crosses genres with ease, her songs laced with heart-piercing lyrics, emotional weight and a voice to die for. With critically acclaimed albums under her belt, as well as international concerts at festivals and clubs in countries like France, Germany, Italy, and Romania, Neon Ion has already solidified her place as an artist to watch.

Craven Faults plays their analogue machines the way others tend a fire, turning dials, letting them crackle and sag. The rhythm wobbles, the voltage dips, the bass tones thicken the edges. Minutes become abstract moments. The mind wanders, wondering what the time is, whether to twist a bypass filter or ring modulator. The sound is neither polished nor retro, it’s too organic for that. There’s a warmth, but the sort created by friction, or the way old electronic things talk to each other.

“Yard Loup,” the lead track, is a slow-spinning arpeggio that barely moves but somehow keeps unfolding. The bassline shifts underfoot like a slow current, but still too hypnotic to ignore. “Stoneyman” carries more industrial weight, a metallic pulse rubbing against itself until it’s absorbed into synthetic percussion. Then “Three Loaning End” opens a long clearing, its fibrous bass thinning until it evaporates like fog lifting off wet ground. Nothing so much happens as continues with Craven Faults.
