Singer/guitarist Steve Lympany is an unsung hero -he makes singing and playing guitar to perfection seem effortless. His old band, the Mild Mannered Janitors were probably in retrospect every bit as good as the Prisoners, but because they formed after-them and were undeniably influenced-by them, they were dismissed as ‘copyists’ by some.
I nearly got in a fight with a London-area support band in the early 90’s when they informed me of this belief and I defended the Janitors. I honestly don’t remember their name but do recall they murdered ‘Another Girl, Another Planet’ too, hence never getting written about at the time and me forgeting who the fuck they were.
Legend has it that the Mild Mannered Janitors “blew the Stone Roses offstage” when they supported them in Portsmouth in April 1989 on their first tour. But it may have been the band themselves who told me that, so unreliable witnesses perhaps.
Freestone drummer Steve Morris was in another of Portsmouths all-time-great bands, The Good Time Charlies. (Basically they were kinda like The Hives without the clobber & showmanship but better songwriters in my humble opinion). Steve M writes some of Freestone songs as well as Steve L – and can make the drums a vital part of the song-dynamics in the same way as Mike Kellie from The Only Ones could. Most rock drummers just keep the beat. Very few have a skilled musicianship that usually comes with playing jazz.
