Stoke-on-Trent trio Beck Clewlow, Charlie Ball and Connor Wells have spent the past couple of years selling out their debut EP, building their own studio and touring with Divorce, Fat Dog, Preoccupations and Warmduscher. If they’re new to you, the lazier take is that they’re recycling the twitchy post-punk of the late ’70s. At the Great Escape this year, we saw a few punters walk out of the band’s late-night set muttering about Talking Heads and XTC. They weren’t exactly wrong about the surface noise (Clewlow did yelp like David Byrne), but the comparisons become less useful the longer you actually listen.
Where their earlier songs wore these influences more comfortably, debut album Punch Card doesn’t. So if that comfort was what you liked, consider yourself warned. “How far can we get away with it being unfamiliar and listenable?” is how Clewlow has framed it, even binning three tracks because they fitted too well.
