You can sort of hear that. There’s a far greater sense of control and purpose on this album than on previous Sweeping Promises records, with the sound of familiar surroundings and well-used equipment. As single-minded and arresting as Good Living Is Coming For You was, for example, it felt like a thrilling document rather than an intentional whole; in contrast, You Say I Romanticize is just as fat-free as its predecessors, but there’s more muscle, more meat on the bones.
Opener “Shooting Shadows” is as propulsive and full-throated as anything from their catalog so far; “Abduction on Camera,” meanwhile, carries a palpable sense of doom in its rolling toms and grunting bass; perhaps most muscular of all is the mid-tempo swagger of “Cocoon,” a curled lip of a track that’s as hypnotic as anything they’ve released to date. Touring drummer Spensa Galler, recording with the band for the first time, makes a real difference here: in their favored home setting, with their trusty tourmate allowing them to play the songs as if they were performing a live show, Sweeping Promises sound more cohesive than ever.
