Winter Songs is bassist and composer Steve Swallow's first recording as a leader since 2013, and his first recording since the passing of his decades-long partner in music and life, Carla Bley. His collaborative relationship with Bley dates to performing her music with the Jimmy Giuffre 3 on 1961's Fusion and Thesis. He was part of her many bands and recorded several duo albums together. In 1985, Bley wrote the music for the album Night-glo to showcase Swallow's iconic, always swinging, inquisitive, lyrical bass playing. He recorded this nine-track set at Sear Sound in New York, a year after her passing, with a cast of old friends including saxophonist Chris Cheeks, trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, guitarist Steve Cardenas, pianist Gil Goldstein, and drummer Adam Nussbaum.
