Since their first LP release ten years ago, with Our Truth, Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness – BCUC – have steadily been establishing themselves as a premier voice for expansive sounds that defy borders as adeptly as they defy genre conventions. In many ways, this new record, The Road is Never Easy, is the natural progression of that expansive output, flowing beautifully from folk chanting to adrenaline-fueled Afro-punk in the blink of an eye. In many more ways, though, the record seems to stand entirely in a league of its own.
Inevitably, the problems that come with trying to mash whole worlds together in one song are numerous. Namely, you run the risk of having things muddled, overbearing, or, in some cases, unlistenable. While BCUC’s album certainly couldn’t be described as ‘easy listening’, though, the Soweto outfit manage to expertly evade those all-too-familiar issues, exercising their many years of experience in creating these mind-bending psychedelic melodies.
