Midori Hirano's music creatively fuses classical instrumentation with electronic abstraction and field recordings, sometimes venturing into complex rhythms, particularly when she's working as MimiCof. OTONOMA is her first solo release for Thrill Jockey, following a 2025 collaboration with Brueder Selke. It's a richly expressive work that explores a variety of colorful modular and analog synthesizer tones. Opener "Illuminance" features ever-evolving sequences and glowing synth pads that sound closer to church organs, and its aim seems to be seeking enlightenment. "Ame, Hikari" makes excellent usage of natural sounds, with rainfall providing an undercurrent for the glimmering synth patterns, and a nocturnal insect-like hiss flaring up in regular intervals. "In Colours" focuses on starkly intimate pianos, shaded by a faint trickle of electronics.
