Leigh-Anne is standing on her truth. The UK star has eloquently discussed her experiences in the music industry before, in particular her experiences of racism, and the loneliness of being the only Black girl in the all-conquering Little Mix. It’s been a time coming, but new album ‘My Ego Told Me To’ – her first as a solo artist – feels like a necessary corrective to this. A celebration of identity, it’s a potpourri of reggae, dancehall, R&B, and afrobeats, all gelled together with her undeniable pop instincts.
Drawing on her Bajan and Jamaican background – Jamaica is her second home, and Leigh-Anne even got married on the island – there’s a strong Caribbean feel to the album’s opening arc. ‘Look Into My Eyes’ is the work of someone assured in their own identity, while the spicy ‘Dead And Gone’ is a soulful piece of reggae-infused pop. ‘Revival’ seems to incorporate calypso into the melodies, Leigh-Anne’s voice sounding better than ever, the delivering coming from a very real place.
