これまで高評価が続いている作品履歴からすると、
ちょっと えっ? という感じ。
色々なことに「挑戦」したんだろうけれど。
半分くらいのtracは悪くないけれども、
なんか、いろいろと 軽い というか
浅いというか。
A giddy experimentation marks Cecile McLorin Salvant's eighth studio album, 2025's stylistically varied Oh Snap. Recognized for her virtuoso interpretations of standards, as well as her own poetic originals, Salvant pushes beyond jazz traditions on Oh Snap. Much of this is due to her writing process, which initially found her recording on her own with digital tools, a choice purportedly sparked by her desire to reconnect with her initial passion for music. She did eventually bring others into the process, including close collaborators like keyboardist Sullivan Fortner, drummer Kyle Poole, and bassist Yasushi Nakamura. You can hear the difference on the album, which finds her embracing a multiplicity of sounds, from the percolating synths and multi-tracked vocals of opening track "I Am a Volcano" to the closing "A Frog Jumps In," which sounds like a Gregorian chant fused with an electro-acoustic tone poem.
