The vocal arrangements and performances across this record are beautifully tender. We especially see this on “Emily and Me”, where the English duo address a gentle love letter to Los Angeles. The floating vocal quality continues on “I’m So Down,” encapsulating a desperation that is not overbearing, but subtly sad in conjunction with the constant willingness to follow someone else’s lead. It’s eager yet soft, and reveals a type of love that may not always be fiery, but is earnest and grounded.

In a lower register, “Hello Sunshine” is a wandering track that calls to mind the mysterious whimsy of Sufjan Stevens. The track itself is not as warm as its title, but is an introspective take on thrusting forward into the life you’ve imagined for yourself: “All my futures are now in present tense/ all this music has started making sense.” There are other moments throughout the record that point to the world of musical influences that likely informed the seasoned songwriters for this project; The Beatles-esque eerie waltz that is “Cold Side of The Pillow,” and the jangly, seventies glitter that flows through “I Just Can’t Believe That We’re Friends.”
