The rise of Lucky Daye has been stunning to witness. It’s important to remember that his official debut single came in 2018 – and since then, we’ve seen an explosion of creativity. 2022 was a stellar year, with a Grammy win, and the commercial success of ‘Candydrip’. New album ‘Algorithm’ finds the R&B star dialling up his ambitions, thrilling with pop turns while remaining true to his soulful roots.
An ambitious 14-tracker, the care and attention put into ‘Algorithm’ means that the project actually hangs together remarkably well. There’s a potent central voice, something epitomised on soothing opener ‘Never Leavin’ You Lonely’. ‘HERicane’ is more than just a delicious pun, a soulful tribute to womanhood.
There’s more than few glittering guests here, but they’re all chosen to add to the over-arching whole. Epitomising his curational abilities, key pop moment ‘That’s You’ was co-written and co-produced by Bruno Mars, a sign of the star power Lucky Daye holds. Yet ‘Paralyzed’ was constructed with RAYE, whose journey in American terms has only just begun – it’s a wonderful moment, the two pushing each other to different spaces within their vocal range.
