過去2作と比較すると、

かなり評価平均が低い。

Voエフェクトの具合を気に入らない人も多そう。

賛否ありながら、

それでも年末には、少ない数であっても

serpentwithfeet previewed several tracks from his third album in Heart of Brick, a 2023 stage production that blended dance and music to tell the tale of two men who fall in love at a Black gay nightclub. With that show and with Grip, he brings a newfound directness to his music while remaining true to his roots in dramatic storytelling. As the album's title suggests, serpentwithfeet explores the powerful physical and emotional grasp of new love, and he makes sure to grab listeners immediately. Co-produced by Nosaj Thing and I Like That and featuring longtime collaborator Ty Dolla $ign, opening track "Damn Gloves" is sleek, driving, and unmistakably seductive; it's dancing as overt foreplay. There's a kinetic glide to the tracks that follow, even when serpentwithfeet pares down songs like "Hummin'" to little more than a come-hither groove. Musically, Grip is much more of a piece than his previous album Deacon, and as he further aligns his music with mainstream R&B, he pairs it with apt allusions to Black culture.
