Their follow-up, Too Hot To Sleep, is almost its antithesis, at least in terms of construction. Here we find the Outfit (Romano's name doesn't even appear on the album's cover) in punk mode, a lean and wiry unit with the gonzo blare of the Stooges, the melodic punch of the Dickies, and a dash of the Shangri-Las' sass. As he's proven with all his releases, Romano gives 110%, though rarely has he come in so hot. Opener "You Can Steal My Kiss" flexes its Stones-ian swagger while cuts like "Where's Paradise" and "Field of Ruins" echo jagged late-'70s power pop. Few songs exceed the three-minute mark and many of the highlights (the sizzling political diatribe "That's Too Rich," in particular) are less than two. Because this is Daniel Romano, there are also eclectic shifts within songs; the excellent "Field of Ruins" pulls the rug out halfway through with a clever time signature change and stacked harmonies that recall their previous release. This rough and tumble version of the Outfit is undeniably magnetic, and even if Romano only remains here for one album, it's another satisfying chapter in his sterling catalog.
