Sarah Jarosz has been a darling of bluegrass since her first album was released in 2010. She’s won four Grammys, for folk and Americana categories. Stints on Live from Here with Chris Thile on NPR and on the road with Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek) and Aoife O’Donovan (Crooked Still) as part of supergroup I’m with Her have only bolstered her reputation further. So it’s surprising to hear Jarosz go pop after all this time, but maybe this is the ideal moment: on her seventh album, with her own identity established, Jarosz can co-write Nashville-style without feeling like her own voice is getting lost in others’ work.
Jarosz collaborated with many other musicians on this album, including producer/writer Daniel Tashian (The Silver Seas), Ruston Kelly and Natalie Hemby, all of whom have made their bones as Nashville songwriters. Tashian is perhaps best known for working on Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour, but the sound here on Polaroid Lovers is still recognizably Jarosz. Her signature octave mandolin hasn’t gone anywhere – but now it’s bolstered by synths and heavy-hitting session musicians like guitarists Rob McNelley (Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood) and Tom Bukovac (Tom Petty, Vince Gill).
