I Get Into Trouble is the second album from Australian singer-songwriter Maple Glider – real name Tori Zeitsch. Where her debut album To Enjoy Is the Only Thing was a hypnotic slice of psychedelic folk, I Get Into Trouble’s lead single Dinah sees Zeitsch lean harder on her pop sensibilities. Cheerfully melodic, you’d be forgiven for not noticing the dark biblical story it retells – of assault, abandonment, fear and faith.
These themes persist across this sparse diaristic record, coming to the fore on the grungy, vulnerable Don’t Kiss Me. Surprises, too, sees Zeitsch reckon with how mundanely a life can be altered: 'Karaoke never seemed like much fun after / I wonder if you knew what you were going to do?' There are shades of Karen Carpenter in Zeitsch's cool guileless vocals, so effortlessly moving.
Hopeful finger-plucked guitar couplet You At the Top of the Driveway and You’re Gonna Be a Daddy offer a moment of tender relief. On both songs, Zeitsch contemplates becoming an auntie with a mix of longing, hope and humour. The passing of time aches here, as she imagines her brother’s child doing the things they did as children: collecting tadpoles, going for walks, dancing.
