Værmin is the follow up to the Norwegian-Irish, singer/songwriter’s debut album, Alchemy, which came out in January 2020. Just before the world closed down. That was a well-received record, one magnificently described by German newspaper, Der Spiegel, as “like Kate Bush singing songs by Nick Cave at Berghain”. That depiction sits just as comfortably with Alchemy’s follow up. I listen to Værmin and I get it. That undulating and intriguing quality of Bush is right here, as is that ability to create an intelligent and differentiated version of pop music. Moreover, it comes with a healthy dollop of dark gothic.
