観光ボランティアの研鑽活動の一環として開催されるオンラインセミナーに参加しました。
日本語はHigh Contextなので、話し手が伝えたいことを、聞き手が推測して意図をくみ取る必要がある言語。
つまり聞き手に責任がある。
でも英語はLow Contextなので、聞き手にわかりやすく話し手が話す必要がある言語。
つまり話し手に責任がある。
講演者が言いたかったことは、英語が聞き取れなかった時に聞き返すのは失礼ではない、ということでした。
英語は話し手に責任があるので、聞き手が聞き取れなかったのは、話し手のせいである、ゆえに聞き返してよい、そうです。

【High Context VS Low Context】
I participated in online seminar for volunteer guide.
The speaker said that Japanese is High context.
On the other hand, English is Low context.
Japanese people have to imagine what the speaker expect.
The native Engsh speakers have to say what he or she want to communicate exactly.
I mean, a listener has responsibility when speaking Japanese and a speaker has responsibility when speaking English.
