皆さん、こんにちは！過去進行形をマスターするための最後のレッスンです。今回は、過去進行形を使う際に 注意すべき点 (ちゅういすべきてん) や、日本人がよく間違えるポイントをしっかりとおさえて、完璧 (かんぺき) な英語を目指しましょう！

Ken: Sarah, I was watching a documentary about Studio Ghibli last night. It was talking about how Hayao Miyazaki was creating "Spirited Away". It was really interesting!

 

Sarah: Oh, I was watching that too! Did you see the part where they were explaining how they were drawing the bathhouse? The animators were working so hard!

 

Ken: Yeah, it was amazing to see all the work that went into making the film.

文法解説:

1. 状態動詞に注意！

  • know, like, want, have, be など、状態を表す動詞 (じょうたいをあらわすどうし) は、通常、過去進行形では使いません。
    • 例: I was knowing the answer. (誤) → I knew the answer. (正)
    • 例: She was liking the movie. (誤) → She liked the movie. (正)
  • ただし、一時的な状態や変化を強調したい場合は、状態動詞を過去進行形にすることもあります。 (Lesson 6 で学びましたね！)

2. 日本語の「〜ていた」との違い

  • 日本語の「〜ていた」は、過去形と過去進行形の両方に訳せる場合があります。
    • 例: 私は昨日、本を読んでいました。
      • I was reading a book yesterday. (過去の特定の時間に読書をしていた)
      • I read a book yesterday. (昨日、読書をしたという事実)
  • 文脈によって、どちらの文法が適切か判断する必要があります。

3. 過去完了進行形との違い

  • 過去完了進行形: "had been + 動詞のing形" 過去のある時点までの継続した動作を表す
    • 例: I had been studying English for five years before I moved to Japan. (日本に引っ越す前、私は5年間英語を勉強していました。) - 過去の時点 (日本に引っ越す前) までに、5年間英語を勉強していた
  • 過去進行形: 過去のある時点における進行中の動作を表す
    • 例: I was studying English at that time. (当時、私は英語を勉強していました。) - 過去の特定の時点 (at that time) に英語を勉強していた
