STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

My name is Mandy (XXXX). I am a first year student at Monash University, studying a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science concurrently. I plan to major in the Japanese Language and Immunology and then pursue a career as a medical researcher. I view studying in Japan through the exchange program as an opportunity for me to broaden my horizons. I will allow me to see another side of the world, whilst giving me the chance to experience a different way of life as a student and individual.

I am very attracted to the Intensive Japanese Language program at Waseda University. The program provides a strong focus in the Japanese language and allows students to study at their own pace. As a beginner student, I strongly believe that being placed in a program of such specificity will allow me to deepen my knowledge of the language in all aspects extensively. The program also has an extremely large selection of subjects. One of the subjects includes Intermediate Chinese, which I am interested to undertake to complete the remainder of my Arts minor.

I have also heard many good words about Meiji Gakuin University from previous students whom had undertaken exchange there; especially regarding their impressive buddy system. Futhermore, I am very keen to study the subject offered called, 'The Way of Tea', to participate in the extracurricular activities and studying Chinese, which the university also offers.

Osaka has also been a city in Japan that I have always wanted to visit, due to my high school being affiliated with a senior high school in Hyogo. Because of my interactions with their students, it sparked my interest for wanting to learn Kansai dialects. Therefore, by attending Osaka University, I hope to be able to meet local students whom are willing to teach me the dialects. I was also recommended by a friend who resides in Osaka, to study at Osaka University.

At the Monash Japanese Club, I met a student whom had studied at Saitama University. He really enjoyed his time spent at the university and recommended Saitama University to my friend and myself. Therefore, I decided to place the university as my fourth preference.

I am very conscious of the hardships I may have to face upon arrival and settling down for the first few months, but I believe I have the maturity and qualities to overcome them. I am enthusiastic and dedicated towards my studies and am independent and very open-minded towards society. I enjoy meeting new people, interacting with different cultures and learning its customs and languages. I am a volunteer at my university's Manga Library and frequently attend Monash University's Japanese Club and have recently become appointed as one of their Event Organisers of 2009.

Through this experience, it would allow me to complete my Arts major of Japanese whilst being immersed in Japan's unique and rich culture. I also hope to make new connections along the way, in and out of life, explore historic sites and spend a white Christmas in Japan. I would like to use the opportunity of studying at a Japanese university to meet local students and professors whom are interested in my field of study. Also, to learn more about medical research in Japan, as I plan to find a researching career there upon graduation. Next year would be my sole opportunity to apply for exchange, due to my intention of entering Honours year in Science. If given the opportunity to undertake this study exchange, I will make the most of what is presented. It would mean a dream of mine will be accomplished and will be an experience that I will be forever indebt to and take sincerely to heart.
