Machine translation or English-mode writing
私は普段、英語で考えて書く、つまり頭を英語脳に切り替えて作文しています。それが和文からの翻訳とどのくらい差があるものなのか確認したく思い、今日の行動をまず日本語で書いてそこから機械翻訳したものと、初めから英語脳で書いたものとを比較してみました。
まず、日本語で書いた場合の日記です。
【和文日記】
「今日、お昼近くに駅前に買い物に行こうとしたら雨が降ってきた。自転車で行くのを止めて傘をさして歩いていった。雨は小降りだったが思いのほか風が強くてまいった。
駅前のショッピングモールでは、OAタップとアースノーマットを買った。スーパーマーケットのイートインスペースで、軽くランチした。結構な人手があった。新型コロナのためみなマスクはしているものの自粛疲れだろうか、気晴らしに家族でショッピングしている人たちも多かった。 帰りもやはり雨の中歩いた。なんか疲れたので昼寝してから、夕食当番した。」
これをＷｅｂの「ＤｅｅｐL翻訳ツール」で翻訳してみました。
訳例１【機械翻訳】
“Today, I was going to go shopping in front of the station near noon, but it started to rain. I stopped riding my bicycle and walked there with an umbrella. It was raining lightly, but the wind was unexpectedly strong.
At the shopping mall in front of the station, I bought an OA tap and an earth-normat. I had a light lunch at the supermarket's eat-in space. There were quite a few people there. Although everyone was wearing masks due to the new corona, there were many people shopping with their families to take their minds off of it. On the way back, we walked in the rain. I was so tired that I took a nap and then took charge of dinner.“
やはり直訳っぽいし、文節によっては訳されていない部分もあったりします。
機械なりに文の繋がりを考えて不要とみなした部分は訳していないのでしょうか。
次に、英語脳で考えた今日の日記です。
訳例２【英語脳での作文】
“Today, before noon, it started raining. I was just about leave for shopping mall by the station at that time, so I had any other way but to walk with umbrella. Otherwise, I would have taken my bike to go there. Rain was light but wind was strong, and made me trouble sometimes. At the shopping mall, I bought a multi-plug with 7 sockets and “Earth No-Mat”. After that, I had a quick lunch at the eat-in space in the super-market. Relatively, many people were there. Everyone wore masks for COVID-19, of-course, but maybe they were just tired with being at home for nothing so they came with family to have bit of refreshment.
I walked to home again in the rain, then had a nap to be ready for dinner duty.“
これを機械で和訳してみて、初めの和文日記との差を見てみます。
【訳文２の機械和訳】
「今日の昼前、雨が降り出した。駅前のショッピングモールに出かけるところだったので、傘をさして歩くしかありませんでした。そうでなければ、自転車で行っていたでしょう。雨は小降りでしたが、風が強くて、時々困りました。商店街では、7個口のマルチプラグと「アースノーマット」を購入。その後、スーパーのイートインスペースで簡単な昼食をとりました。比較的、多くの人が集まっていました。みんなCOVID-19対策でマスクをしているのはもちろんだが、何もしないで家にいることに疲れたのか、家族で来ていてちょっとした気分転換になっていた。
私は雨の中を再び家まで歩き、昼寝をして夕食当番に備えた。」
細かい言い回しなどで相違があるものの９割ぐらいは、言いたいことが伝わっていると思います。プロが使用する翻訳機では、相違の部分を少しずつ修正していって和英、英和の翻訳精度を高める、すなわち翻訳者の使い勝手のよいようにカスタマイズしているようです。
でも、上手にカスタマイズできるためにも、英語で考え英語で表現することを習慣化していく必要があると思います。
