Old photos of Bakumatsu period.

TOP Museum (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum) holds currently an exhibition of “Geneses of Photography in Japan: Nagasaki”. I visited it recently and gratified my curiosity on Bakumatsu period. Old photographs, taken around 150 years ago, are displayed and tell us how Dejima and Nagasaki were in those days. We learned in school that Dejima had been the sole place Dutch representative could stay and commercial communication was quite limited. But through the photos I could see many ships from multiple countries came to Japan to have contact with us.
