Gotoku-ji and Ii family

“Gotoku-ji” at Setagaya-ku is the family temple of feudal lord Ii family, which dominated Hikone-han, present Shiga prefecture. Originally, the temple had been built in 1480 as “Kotokuin” and in 1659, the name was changed as “Gotoku-ji” by taking a part of posthumous Buddist name of Naotaka Ii. Before the temple was humble Soto-school temple but after it became family temple of Ii in 1633, land around the temple was donated and admirable temple was built. So the temple became one of the biggest temple in Edo. You can see tombs of the successive lords of Ii family.
