The rate of obesity among adults in America in on average around 30 % whereas the Japan obesity rate is only 3.5%.

What makes the weight of people in these two countries so different?

A YouTuber points out a very simple yet key point about Japan. He says that there is a huge variety of equally convenient reasonable healthy food. For instance, breakfast menu in Gyudon shop like, Yoshino-ya, Matsu-ya or Suki-ya, is not oily and refrained from sugar, available everywhere in Japan. Besides, extensive options of foods are possibly obtained at convenience store. The quality of food in the store is not the best but not bad. Such food environment is drastically different from US, which option is comparably much less than Japan.

Furthermore, he discusses on situation of drink between these two countries. In America, soda which contains lot of sugar, is consumed at 170 liters purchased per person in a year. 32 liters per person in a year in Japan. This is not because availability of soda in Japan is less than US, then again, variety. You can find many types of unsweetened drinks in vending machines which cannot be find vending machines in US.
