UNEMPLOYMENT IN JAPAN ~university students~
INTRODUCTION
Generally speaking it is difficult for Japanese university students to get jobs recently. This year and last year Japanese employment rate rose, but it had not risen for a few years because Japanese companies were influenced by worldwide recession. Thus they couldn’t afford to hire new employees. However there are other reasons. Many Japanese university students want to work at big companies. Most students are not able to work at big companies. The fact like this makes many students NEET or part-time workers Moreover it is difficult for students who study at University of Tsukuba to get jobs. Please look carefully at these facts.
FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF EMPLOYERS
I will talk about causes of unemployment. I focus on factors on the side of companies. There are two main factors here. One of the factors is structural changes in the labor market. Many companies establish factories abroad such as in China, Vietnam. In these countries, labor cost is lower than Japan. So, factory does not increase in Japan, and employment does not increase. And, many companies try to employ more foreign workers. Another factor is recession of the economy. Because of recession we cannot see the future clearly. So, companies cannot employ a large number of worker. So, employment does not increase.
FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF TSUKUBA UNIVERSITY’S STUDENTS
Sometimes, it is said that “Tsukuba University’s students have difficulty of finding job.” Why is it difficult? I will focus on student side. This university has a lot of departments and good teachers, and we can learn wide knowledge. Of course, it is true that Tsukuba is a good place for studying. However, we should look at our situations. Most of students who belong to the department of Humanities and Culture tend to graduate school in four years. So we have to start job hunting around fourth grade. But in Tsukuba, due to its location, there are few events held by companies. This is one reason why some students lose motivation for finding a job. And also, our connection with graduated students seems to be weak. In this situation, we have to put energy into job hunting.
SOLUTION
In this section, I’ll write about how to solve the serious job shortage.
First: Looking for jobs in small business
So many university students want to get job for major companies while those companies don’t recruit many new employees. Some of them want to work at famous companies. But a lot of small businesses need employees. It is true that most small businesses aren’t famous, but there are good small companies. They should look for jobs not only major companies but also small businesses.
Second: To improve communication skill
According to investigation by Japan Business Federation(経団連),many companies said communication skill is very important when they decide to employ universal student or not. It is essential to improve communication skill. I think communication skill is to being able to talk with various people. To improve this, we need to talk with many people during in university, for example, while in class, club activity.
