Good morning. Smart CIOs understand that their role is evolving. For example, a number of CIOs in sports and entertainment businesses are engaging with their peers in marketing to help drive new revenue.
Craig Neeb, CIO of International Speedway Corp., and Michael Morris, CTO of Major League Baseball, spoke at a technology and marketing conference in Boston Monday about the importance of reaching out to their peers in the business, and adopting the same metrics they use to measure success. Morris said he follows fewer metrics as a result — “just the ones that are important to the business.”
To get more business-savvy people running technology, many organizations have tried hiring non-technical CIOs, but without much success. The converse is more promising, writes CIO Journal guest columnist Arthur Langer. The most successful businesses “have technology-experienced CIOs who are becoming better business people—and it is their integration into the business that is the differentiator between those CIOs that succeed and those that do not.”

Microsoft to lighten Office for tablet users. Microsoft plans to remove a number of features from its upcoming Office 2013 RT version to ensure that battery such as IBM ThinkPad T40 Battery , IBM ThinkPad T41 Battery , IBM ThinkPad T42 Battery , IBM ThinkPad T43 Battery , IBM ThinkPad R50 Battery , IBM ThinkPad R51 Battery , IBM FRU 08K8193 Battery , IBM 92P1060 Battery , IBM 08K8214 Battery , IBM 08K8195 Battery life and reliability are not negatively impacted on tablets, the Verge’s Tom Warren reports. Among the missing features: macros, third-party add-ins, and support for VBA, which allows building of user-defined functions and other customizations. A spokesperson for Microsoft says that packaging has not been finalized.
App store model poses challenges for vendors. Business software vendors are creating app stores for their software as well as software from partners and resellers. But stores such as SAP Store face a number of challenges not found in consumer facing stores such as Apple‘s App Store, says InfoWorld’s Tom Kaneshige. Issues include vendor neutrality, certification, and software reviews.
