In visions of the dark night
I have dreamed of joy departed-
But a waking dream of life and light

Ah! what is not a dream by day
To him whose eyes are cast

That holy dream- that holy dream,
While all the world were chiding,
Hath cheered me as a lovely beam
A lonely spirit guiding.

ノースカロライナ州の小さな町ベンポトゥウイ高等学校。村の牧師の娘で、非常に宗教的で保守的なジェイミーは学校の友人たちに仲間はずれされるのもあまり気にしない。信仰だけが人生の全部であるジェイミーを無視するランドンはジェイミーとは逆に無謀な若さを楽しむ友人たちと一緒に過ごしながら、将来の計画も、信仰もなく、退屈な日常を送る。

レンドゥンウン友達と一緒に全学生に申告式を強要し、けがを負わせた罰として、毎年春に行われる演劇に参加することになる。演技をするのも嫌だけど何よりも相手役はジェイミーというのが不満だ。ところが、ランドンは彼女と演劇の練習をしながら自分も知らないうちに彼女を愛するようになったという事実を悟ることになる。友達の蔑視とご両親の反対にもかかわらず、一緒に夜空の星を見ながら、月明かりの下でダンスをしながら切ない感情を育て行っていたレンドゥングァジェイミー。しかし、彼らはあまりにも過酷な運命が待っている

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
