I was inspired at a seminar held in Tokyo. I did know the information I learned yesterday in detail. I just wanted to confirm again the true purposes of the innovation of English education. According to the presenter, the number of young people who want to work in foreign countries has been decreasing.
The main reason is their English skills. According to the survey reported yesterday, only less than two percent of people are confident in using English. Japan will not be able to survive if we don’t change this situation. But there are a lot of things we have to solve. Teachers have to change the ways of teaching. Students should be allowed to use English in their classrooms. Teachers should be facilitators who help students use English. Teachers should provide opportunities to improve students’ cognitive skills and communication skills.
Some people say it is impossible to introduce the ideal concepts to schools because of entrance examinations. Accordingly, new kinds of entrance examinations, four skills exams, have to be introduced. Tests affect learning styles, so-called backwash effect. Teachers will have to change how to teach thanks to the innovation of entrance exams.
I suppose that teachers will face difficulties in introducing the new concepts. But I believe that these challenges will inspire the teachers and feel they are contributing to a society.
