スコットランド3部作A Scots Quairで有名なギボンによる未完の小説（‘The Speak of the Mearns was never published in his lifetime: like much else, it was still on the anvil when Mitchell died in February 1935, near put away, unfinished but ready to take up again when it reached the top of the pile.’ [Campbell 94]）。スコットランドの農村地帯‘the Howe’の人々とその生活を描き出した作品で、その土地を古い歴史を語った後、それぞれの人々を個性的に活写する。主人公は‘Maiden Castle’に暮らすStratoun家の幼い3男Keithだが（Keithが‘you’と2人称で語られる点も興味深い）、物語の大半は周囲の人々の日常に起こるちょっとした事件やそれに纏わる噂の広まる様子に当てられている。なんとか死に瀕した病から回復したKeithが学校へ通い始め、ようやく物語がその主人公とともに軌道に乗るかと思った頃、Campbellも述べるように突如物語は終わってしまう(94)。
