Subaru Telescope: Overview
The Subaru Telescope, located atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii at an elevation of 4,205 meters, is a large optical and infrared telescope operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ).
-
Location and Organization:
- Situated on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, USA.
- Coordinates: 19°49'32''N, 155°28'36''W.
- Operated by the National Astronomical Observatory.
-
Basic Specifications:
- In operation since January 1999.
- Construction cost: ¥40 billion.
- Main mirror diameter: 8.2 meters.
- Observes in visible light and infrared.
- Opened to observations in 1999 under the project name "Japan National Large Telescope (JNLT)."
- Officially named "Subaru" through a public naming competition.
-
Technical Features:
- The telescope is equipped with 261 computer-controlled actuators supporting the main mirror from the back, allowing precise adjustments to correct deformations caused by tilting the telescope (Active Optics).
- The cylindrical dome shape helps prevent turbulence caused by internal heat radiation, offering advantages over traditional hemispherical domes.
-
Observation Instruments:
- Instruments include IRCS (Infrared Camera and Spectrograph), CIAO (Coronagraphic Imager with Adaptive Optics), COMICS (Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer), FOCAS (Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph), Suprime-Cam, and more.
- Hyper Suprime-Cam, installed in 2012, is a world-leading wide-field camera with a resolution of 8,700 megapixels.
-
Achievements:
-
Individual Observations:
- Discovered filamentous nebulae forming the basis of the universe's large-scale structure.
- Detected a nebula serving as the foundation for a galaxy cluster with more than ten times the mass of the Milky Way.
- Captured the light from the farthest galaxy cluster in the constellation Cetus, located 13 billion light-years away (February 2005).
- Analyzed gamma-ray bursts, confirming the universe's reionization extends to 900 million years after the Big Bang (May 2006).
- Discovered the farthest quasar, 12.7 billion light-years away in Cancer (August 2006).
- Found the most distant galaxy in the direction of Coma Berenices, 12.88 billion light-years away (September 2006).
- Explored the universe at an unprecedented sensitivity, discovering seven galaxies 13.1 billion light-years away, just 700 million years after the Big Bang (November 2014).
-
International Collaborations:
- Collaborated with NASA's Deep Impact probe to observe the impact on a comet.
- Collaborated with NASA and ESA for observations related to the Cassini spacecraft and the New Horizons mission to Pluto.
-
-
Observational Techniques:
- Maintains the precision of the 8.2-meter mirror using dynamic support devices.
- Utilizes adaptive optics to compensate for atmospheric turbulence, achieving diffraction-limited images in the near-infrared.
- Developed a high-precision adaptive optics system using artificial stars (laser guide stars) for even greater accuracy.
-
Data Sharing:
- Shares deep-survey images and detected celestial objects globally, promoting open access to the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) dataset.
The Subaru Telescope, with its advanced technologies and international collaborations, continues to contribute significantly to astronomical research, providing crucial insights into the cosmos.
