"My Cousin Rachel" opens with two questions: "Did she" or "Didn't she?" Those queries are circumscribed by ethical considerations about the title character. In her relationship with her "cousin" Philip Ashley, is Rachel genuine in her feelings towards him and her deceased husband Ambrose, or is she a gold digger who is putting on an act?

The film is based on Daphne DuMaurier's 1951 novel, which is a romantic mystery with psychological depth. As indicated in the bonus segment of the DVD, the filmmakers described how their choice of a setting in the 1840s offered them a transitional period that was occurring in England at the height of the Industrial Revolution. A marvelous brick Tudor home owned by Bamber Gascoigne in West Horsley served as the major setting for the fictional Penhale estate on the Cornish coast. The costumes were sumptuous, and the cinematography was breathtaking. There is an unforgettable scene that was filmed in a field of blue lilacs.

One of the drawbacks of the film lies in the character portraits of the two leads, Philip and Rachel. The main problem is that neither character is very sympathetic. To wit:

• In the special features segment of the DVD, director Roger Michell described Philip as an "addict" in his obsessive relationship with Rachel. At the very least, he is impulsive to such a degree that he stupidly insists on deeding his entire estate to Rachel at the precise moment at midnight on the day the property passes to him on his twenty-fifth birthday. The other characters recognize the potential dangers of his impulsiveness, especially the sympathetic character Louise, who clearly adores him. At some point, you just want tell Philip, "Grow up and listen to your friends!!!"

• For her part, Rachel is mercenary beyond belief in accepting Philip's largesse. Her sense of acquisitiveness seems boundless. She is also callous in her treatment of the naive young man. When he proposes marriage, she acts as if she has been offended, then humiliates Philip in a cold rejection that includes inviting the local vicar's daughter to reside in the home. In the bonus segment of the DVD, actress Rachel Weisz described her character's relationship to Philip as that of a mother-in-law. But, come on, Rachel Weitz! Your character went far beyond the role of a mother-in-law when she slept with with Philip on the occasion of his twenty-fifth birthday!

Viewers are forced to decide the degree to which Philip is an infantile co-dependent who has become "whipt" on the dazzling cosmopolitan woman arriving from Italy. They also must come to terms with the degree to which Rachel is a black widow spider. The film does not provide definitive answers to the major questions of "Did she?" or "Didn't she," leaving the viewer guessing. In terms of suspense, that is the sign of a pretty good film..
