【Kan elected DPJ leader】
Deputy Prime Minister Naoto Kan has been chosen the new leader of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, and is certain to be elected Prime Minister later on Friday.
The party vote for a new leader was held on Friday between Naoto Kan and Lower House member Shinji Tarutoko at a general meeting of the party's lawmakers.
Tarutoko said that Japan and his party are now in a crisis. He said the election must work to turn this crisis into opportunities and that he hopes to take the helm to face these challenges.
Kan said he hopes to take over former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's resolve to break the deadlock faced by Japan.
Kan also said he will first address political fund scandals and work to regain public trust in politics.
In the vote, Kan garnered 291 votes of the 420 available, while Tarutoko took 129.
Kan is certain to be elected Japan's 94th Prime Minister at plenary sessions of both houses of the Diet later on Friday.
Kan, who is 63 years old, has been elected to the Diet 10 times.
He was first elected to the Lower House in 1980. As a member of the now-defunct New Party Sakigake, he joined the Cabinet for the first time in 1996 as health and welfare minister under a coalition government. During his term, he gained fame by tackling the issue of HIV infections through tainted blood products.
Under the government of his predecessor, Yukio Hatoyama, which took office last September, Kan first served as Deputy Prime Minister and National Strategy Minister.
Since January of this year, he has supported the Hatoyama government in the posts of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
