ｱﾒﾘｶの政治家。ｼﾞｮﾝ・F・ｹﾈﾃﾞｨ大統領の弟。ﾊｰﾊﾞｰﾄﾞ大学卒業。兄ｼﾞｮﾝの大統領選挙戦に事務長として活躍,当選後司法長官として入閣(1961～1964)して兄を補佐した。1964年11月ﾆｭｰﾖｰｸ州から上院議員選挙に出馬して当選。68年3月民主党の大統領候補選挙に出馬表明。
本文は大統領候補としてｲﾝﾃﾞｨｱﾅ州ｲﾝﾃﾞｨｱﾅﾎﾟﾘｽに遊説中,人権活動指導者ｷﾝｸﾞ牧師の暗殺の報に接した直後に行ったｽﾋﾟｰﾁの全文。
黒人勢力からの暴力的報復を懸念する側近の静止を振り切って群衆の前に登壇。原稿なしの即興ｽﾋﾟｰﾁでｷﾝｸﾞ牧師への哀悼の意を表し,暴力主義と対決する姿勢を鮮明にして合衆国の人種間の融和を訴えた。このｽﾋﾟｰﾁで黒人層の支持を取り付け、民主党の最有力候補に躍り出た。
しかし2カ月後の6月5日,ｶﾘﾌｫﾙﾆｱ州予備選挙に勝利し,勝利宣言を行った直後,ﾖﾙﾀﾞﾝ系移民に背後から狙撃され,翌朝死亡。

9. For those of you who are black and are tempted to be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act, against all white people, I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed, but he was killed by a white man.

What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness, but is love and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country, whether they be white or whether they be black.

13. So I ask you tonight to return home, to say a prayer for the family of Martin Luther King, yeah that's true, but more importantly to say a prayer for our own country, which all of us love - a prayer for understanding and that compassion of which I spoke.

19. But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in this country want to live together, want to improve the quality of our life, and want justice for all human beings that abide in our land.

20. Let us dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world.
